It’s Thursday! This means it’s time for another Throwback Thursday Clip of the week presented by Easterns Automotive Group. Easterns is the premiere car dealer with 6 stores located conveniently throughout DC, Maryland, and Virginia. For this throwback clip, Easterns recruited NBA star Bradley Beal who is shooting guard for the Washington Wizards. Beal was widely accepted by residents of the DMV (DC, Maryland, and Virginia) area when he was drafted by the Wizards. The respect and love began to grow through Beal’s work ethic and skill on the basketball court. With his track record and proven success, it only made sense for Easterns to bring him on board to make an Easterns jingle commercial back in 2014. These jingle commercials give fans and consumers a chance to a chance to see some of their favorite celebrities and professional athletes in a different setting than they are used to. Beal was able to step out of his comfort zone and get into character and have some fun. He really made it his own with the hand gestures and silly movements. That’s what it is all about! We want to congratulate Beal for just playing in and winning his very first NBA All Star Game. He was on Team Lebron which beat Team Curry 148-145. Kudos to you, sir!
We have a special treat for you all this week! Of course, it’s time for our Throwback Thursday Clip of the Week but this one is special. The stars of this week’s commercial clip are Jordan Reed of the Washington Redskins, Bradley Beal of the Washington Wizards, and Brian Orakpo (formerly) of the Washington Redskins. This commercial was shot back in 2014 before Orakpo became a player for the Tennessee Titans. What makes this clip so special is that Easterns had players of both the NBA and NFL in one commercial. People in the community were very excited about this especially because majority of them are die-hard Washington fans period. People in the DMV metro area always show up and support no matter the sport or league. Any athlete that is good at their sport and a respectful individual will always gain the likes of fans in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area. Reed, Orakpo, and Beal had such a blast filming this commercial because they were able to get outside their comfort zone. You can see them smirking and dancing while singing the jingle. It’s always refreshing seeing athletes off the field when they can showcase their fun personality. These guys really did make it their own. Who wouldn’t want a car from Easterns after watching this? What a fun shoot!
Easterns Automotive Group is responsible for creating a notorious jingle that is known both locally in the DC metro area and worldwide. In the DC, Maryland, and Virginia community, it is not uncommon to turn on Fox 5 or ABC 7 and see one of these jingle commercials playing regularly. Those not in the area swarm in numbers to watch these comedic clips on YouTube. Easterns has developed quite the online following with fans that are eager to see who will be the next to star in a jingle commercial. Using pro athletes, actors, and comedians has been the key to Easterns success.
Up and coming comedian and DC native, Reese Waters, always had it in his mind that he wanted to do an Easterns jingle commercial. Competing with the likes of comedians like John Witherspoon, Gilbert Gottfried, and Kevin Pollak; Waters knew this would be one for the books. He showed up on September 16th with a ESPN Sports Center camera crew ready to film his very own commercial. Waters first met with Joel Bassam, Director of Marketing for Easterns Automotive Group, to run down the history of how the Easterns jingle commercials came to be and to discuss the possibilities of him doing a commercial literally on the spot. Joel thought it would be a great idea so Waters got right to work. The process of shooting was in fact hilarious due to the nonstop laughs during filming.
After the shoot, Waters paid a visit to the home of Josh Norman, cornerback of the Washington Redskins. The purpose of the visit was to seek a critique from Norman on his commercial and get some tips and advice on how he could make it better. “You Sucked!” yelled Norman in a jokingly manner. Norman knows a thing or two about being in an Easterns commercial since he was recently in one alongside Kirk Cousins and Ryan Kerrigan. The three of them make up Easterns All Star Team.
Watch Reese take on the Eastern Motors jingle here on Sports Center.
If you are from the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area than you most likely have heard the Easterns jingle at some point in your life. From television commercials to radio, Easterns Automotive Group has developed a huge following from their catchy jingle along with their infamous commercials and skits with celebrities, major athletes, and entertainers. This trend that was started by Easterns has been taken and flipped different ways by other brands, automotive companies, and businesses. It’s clear that Easterns impacted not only the DC metro area but also the world as a whole.
One of the most notable Easterns commercials is with Ray Lewis, Lavar Arrington, and Clinton Portis singing the jingle. This is the one that people still actively post and share via social media. There is a fascination that fans have with seeing their favorite macho NFL players singing such a humorous song. Some other notable guests Easterns got early on include Willis Mcgahee, DeAngelo Hall, and and Santana Moss. The Easterns roster goes on on and because so many NFL players found interest in wanting to participate. Carlos Rogers, Chris Cooley, and Antwaan Randle El are all former Washington Redskins now but have previously been apart of the ‘Eastern Motors’ movement. The list doesn’t stop there, Lavernaues Coles, Alfred Morris, and Brian Orakpo have also previously sang along to the infamous tune. The late Sean Taylor of the Redskins also had his fair share of Easterns fun during his time in the NFL. It’s a great way for fans to remember and honor the great person that he was. Today, Easterns has an All Star Team consisting of Kirk Cousins, Josh Norman, Ryan Kerrigan, and Jordan Reed, all current players of the Washington Redskins.
The NFL is not the only sports association to be associated with Easterns. Early on in his career, the company recruited Baltimore’s own, Carmelo Anthony. Bradley Beal of the Washington Wizards represented for the NBA and the DC metro area last year while staring in his very own Easterns jingle commercial. However, one commercial tends to stick out and that is the one of NHL hockey star, Alex Ovechkin. He is a pretty funny lighthearted guy so many people enjoyed his take on the Easterns jingle.
With the early success of the Easterns brand and overall popularity, the company thought it would be smart to keep the narrative the same but this time incorporate actors, comedians, and musicians. From a marketing standpoint, it is definitely smart to have something for each audience. One particular hilarious jingle commercial that stands out is the one including actor/comedian John Witherspoon, most known for his role on the hit show The Wayans Bros. Gilbert Gottfried and Kevin Pollak were two more guys that had a blast being a part of the jingle campaign. Another popular Easterns commercial was the one including
Fat Joe. He didn’t sing the jingle but he referenced his songs “Make It Rain” and “Lean Back” which were huge in pop culture at the time. Other notable Easterns guests include Harland Williams, Brandon Fobbs, and Guy Torre.
